Two of the largest iSeries Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software vendors are about to become one. Infor has signed an agreement to acquire SSA Global, and according to the press release, the purchase will make Infor "the third largest enterprise software provider in the industry with approximately $1.6 billion in revenue." Infor will pay $19.50 per share in cash to SSA Global's shareholders. Apparently, the "agreement was approved by SSA Global's Special Committee of independent directors, as well as the Board of Directors. The parties anticipate closing the transaction in the third calendar quarter of 2006. The closing is subject to certain customary conditions, including receipt of regulatory approvals and SSA Global shareholder approval. Certain shareholders representing approximately 84% of SSA Global's outstanding shares have entered into voting agreements to support the merger." Read More |

Hardware prices aren't what they used to be. It's not just desktop PC s that cost less than in years past. An iSeries Network article discusses IDC's annual server report, which showed that "in 2005 customers got more technology for their money as server prices dropped and many consumers bought an increasing number of smaller servers." Jean Bozman, research vice president for IDC's worldwide server group is quoted as saying, "You can get into the System i at a lower price point." Apparently it's a "competitive market, especially between UNIX and i5/OS machines." Bozman says, "The effect is units tend to grow over time, where revenue for each unit tends to be less from year to year. Average sales prices for servers have been declining. People are getting more for the amount of money they're paying." Read More |
